THE TANGO, CCB AND MONITOR BOATS
OF THE BROWNWATER NAVY |
|
The CCB was an Operations Command Center and even had air conditioning.
The Bar Armor caused rockets to detonate prematurely
before hiting the superstructure.
Wow what a great web site. It brings back memories of the crew of T-152-13 Boat Captain: BM2 Glenn A Eakes Coxswain: BM3 Richard P Turner Radioman: BmSn Steve Goerner Gunners: Gmg 3 Caral A Clarke Gmgsn Mike Williams Enfn Ernest Butrum (Stumpy) Hm3 allan Bunch Chief Enginer: En2 Howard Dole En2 Dean Borham Half way through his tour Bm2 Eakes was badly injured from friendly fire and lost the use of his right arm he lives with his wife in Yocuksa Japan. En2 Dole took the boat over I would love to locate these guys GMGCM Clarke just retired from USS Normandy. I meet two years ago at the pier in Newport RI When I was on a port visit. I was a rigger at that time at Newport Naval Station. Forget Nam Never. PTSD
The CCB 18 in San Diego was the training CCB at the Naval Inshore Operations Training Center (NIOTC) at Mare Island Naval Base in Vallejo, California. I trained on her before going in country.
In the breathtaking prologue in Browm Water/Black Beret Book, The T-92-6 was the unknown tango boat with he PBRs that were ambushed
We were in too many firefights to count, especially snoopys nose, and rocket alley. Worked with 9th infantry, and vietnamese rangers. We did operation sea float, and many others. Snoopys nose, and rocket alley weren't much fun. We also helped support the marines when they were trying to take hill 881, or was that seafloat.
I know it was a long drive. We hit the ocean and either went up or down the coast. We hauled the officers, and they didn't tell us much either. I was just following the boat in front of me. The 15 and 13 boats weren't there when we were in country. We waited for them on the Benewah, but didn't take long to get there, they were still being built in Washington State where I am from, Aberdeen to be exact.
Thanks to this wonderful computer in the last two weeks, I have contacted on the phone 4 guys who were on my boat. VEGA, angel akaromeo, zero AKA Richard coontz, and Gus. Did you try Mike Harris site he may be able to help. That's how I found these guys. I knew Mike too helped him get his monkey drunk. Have a great day, you have a super site. Mare Island brought back some memories, as well as Whidby Island, a two and a half hour drive from here. PTSD

The Brown Water Navy was being quickly turned over
to the South Vietnamese in 1970 so many American made boats
were no longer manned by Americans.

I had experimented with and installed some beefed up 67164HN9 Gray Marine Engines in this boat! The problem was that the boat was so heavy [overloaded] [100 tons] that the engines belched black smoke from their engine exhaust! The Viet Cong could spot them coming miles away! Yes, they were overloaded! It was my idea to beef up a couple of engines with 4 valve heads, a modification possible if you used your head and lo and behold it worked! Of course, this was before the in-line Series 71 Sixes come into being! The USS Askari could do anything!
