We The Stingrays, were the gunship company of the divisional aviation unit for
the 9th Inf. We flew counter mortar and contact only (however, I remember
boring a lot of wholes in the sky covering Riverine insertions all over the
Delta. We had aircraft that landed on your ships from time to time. And more
than once, we saved the some Seawolf tail!

Notice how our trusted crew chief and gunner stand inboard of the

The Frog - 40 mm Nose Gun
The nastiest nose in the business. It'll drip 250 40MM rounds per
minute. That's why we don't let it catch cold." This aircraft was the
Riverines best friend. We had two of them in the unit. The 40MM could be
placed right along a shore line to keep the bad guys heads down while you
made passage. In addition, the 40MM would explode in the water with
tremendous concussion. I remember using it several times when they thought
Chuck was either sending some swimmers to do a bridge or when they thought he
had submerged some explosives, like a mine, and set them to float down stream
toward the boats.

The Loach
We did not have these in B Co. They were in our DivArty and some
in HHC for use as LNO ships. However, they did spend a lot of time flying on
and off your ships."

The Snake
We never really appreciated our Charlie Models until we got
these. They were almost useless at night when we flew most of our missions
because of glare on the Plexiglass canopy and because we only had two sets of
eyes instead of four. |

VIEW FROM ARMY YFU 81 at Hue
Was only about 9 YFU boats in 1971.
I gather we inherited them from the Navy ---
In 1971 the amenities on board didn't work very good.
But, we carried on for you earlier "boaties" of both branches because the
Viets did next to nothing.
