I came here from Linda's site "Mom's Vietnam Vet Message Board and Buddy Search", from her VN Vet's Links. I am really disappointed that you didn't include the Airboats of A-404 of the IV Corps Mike Force!!:>) On a more serious note, I have pictures of the Vinh Te Canal about the same time, it seems the water was alittle higher in my picture of the Minesweeper, and the mountain in the picture was, as I remember, on the left as you were going toward Tinh Bien; so the mountain I am sure was Nui Giai. I worked with the PBR's during the dry season; they would take us (IV Corps Mike Force) up the canal to set up ambushs. I normally had about 30 Chinese or Cambodian troops with me, with me as the only American. Also; I know, I know, picky, picky, picky:>), it was Chau Doc!!! You will find some pictures on my pages of the Airboats, but I have at least a hundred I need to get scanned. Highest Regards, John (aka Shotgun Jack), IV Corps Mike Force, 5th Special Forces Group, The Mekong Delta, RSVN, Sep.'69-Nov.70.

Kent , you have a very impressive web site. It's very professionally done and informative. I was "InCountry"
9/66-9/67. I started out in CatLo waiting for the our PBRs to arrive, patroled with the 542 sectiion there. We
assembled 532 and they left for MyTho. I stayed behind and started 533. We got our boats and we moved
to NahBe, which was being built at the time (we lived in tents like on M.A.S.H.). After a 7 month stay there
we moved to an LST for the remainder of my tour. The section (533) Finally moved to MyTho, But was at
Vin Long for TET 68.I never had the pleasure of a YRBM but it had to be as good as an LST without A/C.

Was first stationed at Tan An (Sept.'69). Remember the inspections and the strip shows, boys?
River Division 573, worked it's way West. If I remember things right, we lived on the floating barracks/supply ship, at Tra Cu, on the Vam Co Tey river, it was called the "Apple". Smoked a lot of "Can Sa" on that barge.
We then got orders to go to Rach Gia, the advanced base there was called Rach Soi. Those orders scared the crap out of us because there was a lot of NVA activity due to the fact that it was so close to the Cambodian border, we were used to dealing with VC.
I spent a lot of time on the canals in night ambush, just 3 clicks from a NVA Prisoner of War camp. We had one incident of NVA troops trying to cross the border, they had been driven out of the nearby mountains by B-52's, I still remember the rumbling. When the fire-fight was over we went out into the field to get the body count. Any one out there remember any of this? Contact me?
I am pictured on Kent's Web site sitting on the bow of my boat, relaxing, playing the guitar with a couple of friends during some down time.

You have done a great job on your web page. I have really enjoyed it and it has brought back a lot of memories. I was a GMG3 on a Stab Boat call sign Racing Danger 001. I cross rated to steelworker in the Seabees after I left Nam. I retired as a Senior Chief Steelworker in 1988 but I will always be a river rat in my heart. Until our Stab boats arrived in country in early 70 I worked with the Duffle Bag unit out of Thuy Nhon and rode Tangos, Alphas, PBRs. and Army air boats up around FOB GettysBurg where the seals were making a man made canal joining the Vam Co Tay and the Van Co Dong using det cord. After Duffle Bag I went on 99 patrols with Riv Div 512 PBRs. When my boat arrived in country I was ready to operate thanks to the men I served with in the above mentioned units. I think that was a major factor in my coming back home in one piece physically. My heartfelt thanks to all the River Rats, Seawolfs, Seal teams, Army recon and Marine Recon I had the pleasure to operate with. You are all heroes in my books. Thanks again for a great web page.

My boat was pbr 62 which I noticed was damaged the night pbr 64 was sunk. I can't tell you how much it means to me to see the photos of the chou doc -tan chou area since
I spent a good part of the year there. I even recognized the
the river bank where the A boat was sunk near the rvn outpost,
we were the first boat up that canal in 1967 when that outpost was over run the night before.
I even believe GMG2 Patrick Ford who was killed was
the boat commander of pbr 61 in 522 when I was there...

Guest Record 680 First of all thanks for doing all this work and setting this up for everyone. I have blocked out most of Vietnam. I was stationed in Danang for 3 months at the Naval Support Communications Center. I was then transferred to PBR Mobile Base One. Took me several days to find it. I bummed rides and whatever. Stayed at a SeaBees camp one night on the way there. Don't have a clue where that was. I was a Radioman 3rd class. PBR Mobile Base One was called "Curveball" and we were located in a cove. I remember one Sunday we had about 67
helicopters land on beach, sanddunes, and on our helo pad that held one to join us in our great meal. They mostly be 101st airborne and knew where to get a great meal. There was a fire on beach where some Army guys got burned up and our guys put out fire and got bodies out but too late. Believe this happened October 1970. We turned over everything to the South Vietamese and our barges, PBR's, and Mike 8 Boat were towed seaside. We went down the coast and our destination was Danang Harbour. This was about a month before I came home in April 1971. Like any information available from all Vietnam Vets - Army, Navy, Marines, etc. that were there during 1970-1971. I be from Charleston, WV and thankful for any help.

Record 740 I was a civilian working for the voluntary agency IVS in the Delta in 1967 and 68. During the early days of the Tet Offensive, I was taken from near Hong Ngu to Cao Lanh (Kien Phong prov.). I was supposed to be met by Prov. rep. at the ferry crossing. No one arrived and then small arms and artillery fire started up near the ferry. Vietnamse were disappearing and the price of Coca-Cola was escalating severely. I have never seen a more welcome sight than the Navy lifer ( and the PBR wth its resplendant American flag) motioning me to come with him. The PBR's crew heard I was stuck on the ferry landing and came back up the river more than 20 miles to get me. I have always wanted to thank again the guys who went way out of their way to make sure I was safe. I am currently an attorney for the City of Philadelphia. Thank you.

Record 795 Norman Wayne Mocabee was my brother. He passed away on October 5, 2000 from Agent Orange related Pacreatic cancer. He never spoke much of Viet Nam, other than he served on the Bayfield and Enterprise, and that he was on PBR somewhere around DaNang area. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received when two boats came under attack. He was there from 66 thru 68. He graduated from high school in New Jersey and enlisted in California/ basic in San Diego? If anyone served with him or knew him, please contct me. Also, if anyone can help me find out how to get the VA to allow a dying vet to die in any VA hospital, please e-mail me. My brother's story of dying is only three weeks long, but too long for this guest book. I made him a promise before he died but don't know how to fulfill it. If anyone would be interested in helping me or hearing his VA story.......please contact me. Thank you all who fought for my safety and my future, bless ya. Great site

Record 814 I was assigned to PBR Mobile Base One when it was still on the drawing board. At the time, no one could tell me anything about the base. After SERE training, I found it in Long Beach, CA. At that time it was just four barges being built and outfitted. It was ready to deploy in September of 1967. We loaded it aboard two LSD's; the Comstock and Whetstone and set sail for Saigon. Rough water made the crossing to Pearl a nine day ordeal. Before Pearl we got orders to Danang. I don't do rough seas very well (Being from the mid-west, I never learned about sea sickness until I joined the Navy.) At Pearl, I talked my skipper into letting me fly on ahead to Danang and set everything up for the base's arrival. We were towed up to Tan My at the mouth of the Perfume River from Danang in calm seas and anchored with four 6,000lb Danforth anchors. The PBR's showed up a few days later and started their patrols. Things were very quiet in that area of Vietnam until TET. Even then, the base itself never saw any action. To my knowledge, everyone got home safe and sound.

Record 989 I was in pbr class 50,around oct.or nov.1967 any way, after completion of s.e.r.e.,boat school, etc, left phillipines our final school,we flew into siagon that morning under alot of choas.TET WAS IN FULL SWING,we were transported to military buses to Annopolis hotel for processing I remember hearing music playing close by,I stopped and asked a G.I. what was going on and he said "rock n roll band playing upstairs,Montana club,so I climbed stairs ,and here was this huge room filled with GI's and a phillipino band playing. They were on break, and I saw one of the band members drinking soda,I approached him and ask if possible I could play next song.along with $5 ,he said ok.AsI walked on stage and seeing all the G.I's having fun,I grabed mic and asked for drummer, bass, keyboard player and me on lead guitar.I was wanting to come up with a song that would grab our minds and souls as we entered a war far from our own country, guess what song we did? CAIN'T GET NO SATISFACTION by the Rolling STONES,we did the song perfectly, the place went nuts,I have never seen so much feelings expressed that it was unbelievable. What a way to go on from there. Now all these years emotions have passed I still remember that day at the Montana club.d.e.w.
