I was lucky enough to go out on three PBR mission. The last was a Probe for the first Flaming Arrow mission at the start of 1968. We were a single boat and we could not draw any fire or activety. The next morning going home we passed the main force of 18 PBR,s Later I found out it was a trap for them they lost many. Thay are in my heart and sol. It was a wild time then. When I got back to the USAF my First Shirt found out some how and I was chew out. All the best to my brothers in the NAVY. BILL BRASEL,USAF RET.

This video documents the role of Army marine pilots and harbor personnel in Vietnam. Includes on camera interviews actually taken during the Vietnam War. Most scenes were shot at Cam Ranh Bay and Qui Nhon Harbor. I arrived in country at Saigon in Jan 66. Several days later we were trnasferred to DaNang. Initially we lived aboard the Magoffin. Later transferred to the old French Army barracks across the river from DaNang. We sorked 12 hours a day 7 days a week off loading litters onto trucks and transports. In May 66 a number of us were sent to ChuLai to releive the Marine Shore Party. In ChuLai all the supplies were brought in by LST's. In February of 67 I went back to "the world" and got stationed on DD808 out of San Diego. In January 68 DD808 went on a WestPac to support operations off Viet Nam. I cna only remember the last names of some of the guys I served with in DaNang (Dodge, Fink) and ChuLai( Burdett). I have some pictures of the base at ChuLai. I was there in the winter of 67 when the LST broke anchor and went aground.

In late 1967 the Phibron Five Ready Group was ordered to extract the 3rd Marines from Dong Ha, give them a week of seasickness, feed them Thanksgiving Dinner, then land them somewhere else. The Iwo Jima (or was it the Okinawa) would send its helos to pick up the infantry. My ship would send 4 borrowed LCM8s to ferry the artillery. I would go in Boat #2. The worst part was the briefing for all Captains and Boat Officers in the LPH the day before, with a huge wall map of the Cua Viet and a vivid account of all the bad things that had happened there to date. We were warned to watch for floating mines, mortar opportunities, secretly armed sampans, "spider holes" and other horrors as we ran the gauntlet. We were ordered not to return fire unless (1) we could visually identify the perpetrator and (2) we received radio permission from very high up the chain of command. We were also ordered not to share this information with the crews or gunner volunteers since it might unnecessarily affect their effectiveness. The actual trip wasn't quite as bad as the briefing, although we did have some trouble about four miles upriver, with fishing boats coming alongside, under the useless .50s, and parking across my bow, feeding a line which wrapped around one of my screws. Thank God it wasn't both of them. Thank God also for the UDT guy, who, when I sent him forward to "shoot at floating mines," knew just what to do. There's more but that's enough. A lot of other stuff happened during my scattered brownwater visits, but that's the day that I think about every day and on bad nights.

I have been here quite a few times, but do not remember leaving any comments. We spent our time hauling supplies up the rivers of nam, all the rivers. Landing Ship Squadron - Two (Hickman 825, Monmouth 1032, Madera 905, Luzerne 902, Caddo Parrish 515) was assigned to nam in July 1965. From the history I have found, they were the first LST's be assigned permanent incountry duty, and travel the rivers of nam. The Hickman earned 11 battle stars (5 while I was aboard), MUC, VN MUC-Gallantry, VN Svc medal (with several stars), VN campaign, Combat Action. Several crew members were awared the Purple Heart (some while I was aboard). I remember mortar/rocket attacks at Dong Tam, Vinh Long, Saigon, Cau Viet. Remember the night Charlie blew the oil tank at Cat Lo, and mortar'd beach at Vung Tau. I was accross the street at the bar (go figure) when it started. Ran to the beach cause there was a bunker there, hit the door of the bunker and bounced back into the beach. It was full of guys and no room, so I figured what the hell, ran another 25 yards to where the Hickman was beached. Almost got shot by my own guys trying to get their attention. Finally got the word passed to the CO, and he dropped the bow ramp while I went back to the bunker and had everyone run to the ship. Very lucky move, when the sun came up, the bunker was gone, had taken a direct hit from a mortar. Maybe I was stupid or just young and didn't think I could die, but during those times of being attached, I was never scared, I just did my job. After everything was over, was when I got scared, and it dawned on me that I (maybe) just did something that could have gotten me killed. Problem was, I never thought about that when we went to Red Alert, only after. Anyway, wanted to say to LSR-2 ships and crews, from 65 to 69 when squadron departed Nam for the last time: Job Well Done...God Bless you ALL. You put yourselves and ships on the beach's, in positions that you could not use your guns to defend yourselves. You just sat there and took it. You men are some of the bravest (believe it or not) men to have ever served in nam. God Bless you and WELCOME HOME SHIPMATES! ALL YOU ARMY, MARINE, NAVY (PBR, SWIFTS,etc) that looked out for us when we were helpless, THANK YOU, GOD BLESS YOU, and WELCOME HOME ! Every one of you are Hero's in my book, Well, maybe not the guys that drank Bami-Bah (33) beer. I figure if you could drink that stuff, you weren't smart enough to duck, so all your medals were earned by accident or brain damage from the beer. If any of you LSR-2 guys have any pictures of your ship, I would sure like to have some. Most of my pictures were lost when my basement flooded, then the house burned down. Hey, I got a new house, a new truck, and a new camper.....ain't home owners insurance great !!!!! Later my friends

Served as Advisor to Coastal Group #41 on island off tip of Camau, transferred to Senior Naval Advisor Staff in Saigon, extended 1 year for Advisor VNN River Assault Group 24 based at Binh Loi. Patrolled Saigon River after TET '68 from Binh Loi north to Phu Cuong/Lai Thieu. Stepped on booby trap grenade late in tour, had right leg amputated, retired. While in Phila Naval Hospital, shared ward with Capt. Louis Puller, Jr (USMC)- Chesty's son, and LT Bob Kerry (USN Seal) later the Senator from Nebraska. Admiral Zumwalt offered me job on his staff at COMNAVFORV as a civilian and accepted. When military left in '73, I remained in Saigon and joined the Defense Attache Office where I worked as Advisor to VNN Blue Water Navy until being evacuated just before Saigon fell in '75. Wound up at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard attached to PERA whose function was Ship's Overhauls. I was Battleship, Cruiser, and Destroyer Repair Engineer until retirement in '97. Now located 3 miles from back gate of Pensacola NAS.

Was on c132-1 for awhile as engineman. Trasnferred to tango 15 . Boat captain was Martinez who later passed away in Dong Tam. Brinkley then became boat captain. We saw quite a little action on the vinh te canal. I was wounded in Oct. and again in Nov of 69. I then pulled radio duty on the Benewah with corky and others. I believe greg was the coxwain. There was a pinky on board as well as three vietnamese. I was medivaced back to the states in Jan of 70. Anyoneone from our unit out there? It would be great to hear form someone.

Tom Wasmund, a blast from the past. I can still picture you, as I can also the dozen guys from detachment alfa whose names are on the wall. Movies, newsclips from the 6 o'clock TV news, photos on patrol, newspaper clippings, printed ephemera, patches, letters home, diaries, I'm still carrying around a lot of baggage. Also the addresses of Tommy Crowson, Ferren Simms, Ken Carlson and Tony Bragg. It still hurts to reflect on those days, but if any B-Boater sends in a call you know there's only one response. Greetings and compliments on a great site. What I am really looking for is two things. First, I am looking for information on my girlfriends father, SN David Arthur Carli from Vallejo Calif. He was KIA on Mar 03 1968 in Quang Tri Province, one day after his 21st birthday. Anyone with any information can email me. We are not sure of the unit he was with or anything else just that he was killed by hostile fire and died while MIA. The second bit of info I am searching is a set of line drawings with dimensions, for an ATC (refueler) that I need to complete a growing collection of scale models of Brown Water Navy boats. My Dad was active in Vietnam from 1964 to 1967 with various Navy Detatchments and also was with Coastal River Division XI at Mare Island in the late 60's and early 70's. The models are for him. Found this site by accident. Great reading, brings back many memories. Spent lots of time underway going between, Cua Viet, Dong Ha , Chu Lai, Hue and Sai win (sp). I was at the ammo ramp in Danag in February 69 when she was hit. We also lost two YFU's. Retired in 96 after doing 30 years. The 1614 is still operating out of Key West.

Great Web Site. I have mentioned the Anapolis Hotel to people and no one knew what I was talking about. I remember it was across the street from the Phuto Race Track. That was a stageing area for the NVA during the Tet Offensive. I often wonder how the guys at the Anapolis made out. When I was ther a little old man with a bolt action rifle was the only guard.

I served on USS Greenlet (ASR-10) a submarine rescue vessel, auxiliary. Greenlet had extensive and elaborate salvage gear and pumps, as well as a complement of twenty deep sea and second class divers, with a Master Chief Diver in charge of diving operations. The Captain and the First Lieutenat were also required to be divers. So when we went to Vietnam, in April 67, we were ordered to salvage duty and to assist the USS Current (ARS-22) a rescue and salvage auxiliary vessel. Greenlet was sent to salvage a sunken barge at Vung Tau in the Mekong Delta. The salvage job had to be postponed, and the barge was towed to a safe place out of the shipping channel. Greenlet was sent to Nha Trang to assist in refloating the M/V Amastra, an oil tanker that had been mined by a swimmer. We spent about a week on that job. Then Greenlet went to Cam Ranh Bay to salvage the black box and the crew's bodies from a C-141 that took off in automatic landing mode and flew into the bay. That took about a week. From there we went to Hong Kong for R & R, but the Red Guard riots ruined it, so we went to Subic Bay instead. I worked in the electrical gang, and stood watch on the auxiliary generators that powered the salvage gear and pumps. Greenlet carried only about a hundred officers and crew. She was very seaworthy and could take rolls up to 45 degrees that would sink any other ship. She also did well in 100 foot seas. Her officers were superb shiphandlers, which saved our bacon in many a storm.

Worked as an ETN on swift boats and other related gear. Tour of duty was June '69 to June '70. When I read the other pages in this website it saddens me even more to see how many men went through a worthless ordeal. I saw several PG's while I was there and the USS White Plains AFS-4 (now lies at the bottom of the sea near Hawaii, just sunk last month June 2002). I guess if I had to be anywhere the support facility was the best place to be. Would I do it over again? Not on your life! We were young an innocent back then.

NOTE: I am trying to find 6 Navy personnel who helped SAVE MY LIFE on 20 January 1970 by pulling me and a little one-armed South Vietnamese girl from the deadly swift current of the Song Cu De River beneath Namo Bridge on Highway 1 a few miles north of Danang, Vietnam near Red Beach. Summary of Actions: On 20 January 1970, I was "riding shotgun" in a USMC jeep, as we were driving across Namo Bridge on Highway 1. In front of us, a young, nine-year old, one-armed South Vietnamese girl was riding her family's water bullalo across the bridge. Someone blew a vehicle's horn which frightened the water buffalo, making it jump, turn quickly, and sort of buck in the air, which threw the little girl off of the water buffalo and over the bridge railing into the swollen and rapid river below Namo Bridge. Fearing that the little, one-armed girl would surely drown, I quickly leaped from the jeep and unhesatating jumped feet-first from the bridge into the Song Cu De River below. Within only a minute or so, I had grabbed the little girl,but she fought me like a little "crazed wildcat" which resulted in both of us being pulled below the surface of the water. I held onto her with one hand and made my way to a bridge support/piling where I held one with my other hand. Within minutes (seemed like hours), 15 to 25 individuals gatered on the bridge and helped pull us from the water. The individuals included 6 Navy personnel which consisted of 3 in a boat, 2 Navy Seabees, and a Corpsman. Other individuals included a couple of Air Force police, a few Army soldiers, and a few Marines (2 bridge personnel with ropes, a radio operator, and about 3 or 4 USMC grunts or CAP Marines. Welcome brothers and sisters. I was aboard the APB-35 Benewah and finished up my tour on the LST-786 Garette County. I spent most of the time on the Cho Chin near Vin Long and Dong Tam. We operated on the Bassac and the Me tho Rivers also. The night of the TET we were in the river along side Vin Long. I know that I took over 3 rolls of photos but like the dumg kids we were, sent them off to have the developed and never saw them again. You will never tell me that our photos were not being checked out when we sent them in to be developed......:( Lesson learned. Some really heavy fire fighting photos, Helo attacks and loads of other great photos. I kept looking for them to turn up in magazines or somewhere else but never saw them again. Spilt milk, no use of crying any more. I am just glad that some of us still have ourselves to talk with. Can't say enough about the brothers I have been able to talk with and put some of the nighmares behind. I was a signalman on both units that I served with. One time I got in trouble for fixing the stupid teletype (I wasn't a TTY repairman, you see!)(I DID fix it though!). Man, the memories this site brought back! I flew with the SEAWOLVES as a door-gunner crew chief. I first started flying the SEALORDS doing runs to all 9 Dets. and doing SEAL insertion and extractions.Then went to Ben Luc Det 4 specializing in the door mounted mini-gun. Our AO was the Plain of Reeds, Parrots Beak, and then we also flew cover for the boats on the Upper Saigon River out of Phu Loi. Later I was with VA-153 on the USS Oriskany and made 3 West Pacs.

this is a great web site it has brought many memories the littleship called rocket rainmaker also the 409 was called theGRIM REAPER the white river and the clarion river was the deadliest fire support boats that was in the rivers of viiet nam both of the commanding officers of these little inshore fire support boats retired from the navy as rear admirals and was great leaders as young Lt.s . they were also good buddys to the crews These boats brought more havoc to the NVA than they could stand.we have so many U S army and marines have thanked us that it shook us up. we were damned glad that we helped we were always fired on by idiots god rest their souls or budda or whoever welcome home brothers

Am looking for chief William D. Waters QMC who was a patrol officer in RivDiv 543 in 68-69 out of Nha Be and Cua Viet or any other shipmate that served in 543. RivDiv 543 was sent to Cua Viet in two waves about 6 weeks apart in 1968. We were in the second group of boats that went up the coast. I never served with a greater bunch of sailors then the ones in the PBR'S.

Worked mostly alone.In 64 we did beach recon with seals and then started our first battle with Operation Starlite. Phriana, Voung Ro River, first ship in Chamroung Bay, opration Game Warden and Riverboat support Mekong Delta. Also brought over first Hoover craft in 65. Ran all over Vietnam and was awarded six combat stars. CAR, PUS, ect. ect..The book Those Magnificiat Bastards was our story. We landed and supported MAF3 3/3 and 3/9. Also landed first Marines in DaNang. Was an experience like us all that we will never forget. Ate,slept and drank AO for many month in Delta. Have health issues now because of Dioxion. Now am 100% P&T Service connected and retired from work in 95. Would like to hear from anyone who has contracted rare Chinese mans disease that blocks off spinal cord in neck. I had serious time with this and when they asked if I was a VN Vet and exposed to AO, I knew I was in a world of S^$%. Advisory Team 59 was stationed in Camau City as the prvince advisors. I was on the operation that evacuated the district headquarters from NAM CAN in October, 1997. I walked the paths (can't really call them streets)of Song Ong Doc, Cai Nuoc, Quan Long and Camau City before any US Brown Water Navy got there. The Vietnamese Navy RAG boat provided the bulk of our transportation. The Navy Intelligence Laison Officer (NILO)and I frequently hitched rides on night patrols in central An Xuyen Provence. On my visit to Song Ong Doc town, there was a single company of RF and perhaps 2 platoons of PF to defend the area. There was a 5 member district advisory team assigned there. The original SOD naval facility appears to have been built a very short distance from their compound. It is fun to find the varity of recollections in your web site and to see what happened in An Xuyen Province after I left there, including the dramatic excape from the VC by Nick Rowe.

Deck Force Crewmember of the YRBM-16 from April 1970 till February 1971 when it went to Guam and I was reassigned at Naval Forces headquarters in Saigon till end of March. Then I went on to USS Ponce which was built in Seattle and then homeported in Norfolk,Va. Many of the plank owner crew including myself seperated on 12/8/72 from the Navy and I was discharged to begin my life of freedom. I went to college and I'm currently a Computer Specialist at the SSA in Baltimore. I was married and got divorced after 5 years. Hello to all, hope you are all well and welcome home!! I was at a local concert Saturday nite and noticed a vet with "Vietnam Vet" on it. I walked over introduced myself, asked where he fought, blah, blah, blah and when we parted I shook his hand and said "Welcome Home"... My girl friend asked me as to why I always say that to Nam vets. She thought that it would be the place of non vets to be saying that. I told her that unlike the combatants of the "declared" wars the vets of Korea and us never came home to the cheering crowds and celebration. Some of us came home to some really not so pleasant greetings. I told her just what it means to each and every one of us to hear those words and I told her how I was reduced to tears when I was told that the first time. There are so many that don't know what the majority of you went through. I had it easy working on the patrol boats....but I also saw alot of the aftermath. My hat is off to all of you guys that ran the canals and faced the hell. I should have told you all that 33 years ago but I guess as young men are emotions were in other places...thanks...hope everyone is doing well.

Served aboard MARK as 1st Division Deck/Dept. GQ was a .50 with a Honeywell M-18 on the side. Mixed it up with enemy in Rung Sat waterways, Mekong same same, and Anthoi in the Phu Quoc Islands. The MARK was the first US Navy ship to enter the Mekong Delta to pave the way for later Forces. USS BRULE AKL28 our sister ship there did the same. Lost a great man, Jim Rickels to later ground casualty. Rest in peace Brother, for you are remembered fondly by many. Greatest sense of humor on the Mark. Bravo/Zulu,can do!

I was a plank owner with 535, having been transfered from 543 at Nha Be to be part of the original crew of the Mark II boats in October of 67. We lost 2 boats in Chau Doc (1 KIA ? WIA) during TET of 68 and another boat in May 68 (3 KIA) on the Bassac River. One of the boats (Hull #727) that we lost in Chau Doc was back in commission after a salvage crew was able to bring it back to the surface...those guys were great. As for the boat we lost in May of 68...there is some absolute BS about Patrick Ford that is listed within this site...I KNOW...I was on his cover boat and I WAS THERE.. I have film that can prove it. A very stupid Lt by the name of William Dennis caused the life of himself and 2 other sailors.... you want details, just em me I WAS THERE

Howdy Perky Bears, with gratitude I remember the Swift Boat sailors and the assistance you provided to our RF/PF troops and U.S. Army Advisors. I especially thank the crew of PCF 56 for coming inland off the wide Co Chien River at about 0115 hours on 3 Feb 69, going 5 Kms into VC controlled infiltration area on the narrow Rach Cai Bai (canal)to get within 81mm range of us around partially built An Hoa OP (mud fort, only one wire; no mines laid) to respond to my urgent call "FIRE MISSION--UNIFORM SERRA IN CONTACT!!-- WE NEED HELP NOW!!!" Us being only seventy-five RF and 26 PF under attack by 400-500 VC. PCF-56 hit VC troop targets breaking up a flanking attack and I'm here to tell our story. Those SEALORDS you men ran,from late 1968 to early Spring 1969,in Thanh Phu broke VC control and provided the offensive punch we (RF/PF) did not have from GVN sources. The Brown Water Navy support was the decisive factor when Swifts hauled our RF/PF warriors into VC areas, deep into FFZ and STAYED with us providing needed fire support when we were on sweeps out beyond the range of the ARVN 105 Hwz section. We especially appreciated the EXTRACTION ride. I know you sailors did not like hauling RF/PF on your boats because they took everything not locked away. After we (Army and MACV US Navy) Advisors got the VN Navy Junks to transport the RF/PF, thus freeing Swifts to be escorts and fire support it worked out much better. Navy support allowed my Counterpart, our District Chief to put RF/PF units deep into the Thanh Phu "Secret Zone" to destroy VC operations located in eastern Thanh Phu FFZ. Successful RF/PF missions would not have been made without close combat support by Swifts. Accelerated pacification by GVN did occur after the Swifts provided increased RF/PF mobility and added fire power. I was the Co Van that cleared the SEALORDS with the District Chief and NEVER did the Cat Lo Swifts ever fail to timely provide our US Advisor Team requested support. I am an Infanrty soldier who rode with Swifts and very proud to have served along side warriors, you Swift Boat sailors. Today I am an active member of the Swift Boat Sailors Association. The boats you are calling a "35 boat" are actually LCPL's (Landing Craft Personnel, Large). They were the primary boats used by Inshore Undersea Warfare Group 1 for Harbor Defense. These boats were used primarily on the waters of Vung Tau, Cam Ranh Bay, Nha Trang, Qui Nhon and Vung Ro. IUWG-1 also used "skimmers", a 16 foot Boston Whaler with an 85 HP outboard engine and 45 ft picket boats. Some of the people you met at the MRFA Reunion in San Diego have more pictures of these boats. I have some also, in addition to pictures of the skimmers.

Don't know where you got the story on Patrick Ford but it is all BULLSHIT annd my River Section did not have a PBR numbered 750 our numbers went from 722 thru 731 and don't doubt that as I have A COPY OF THE ORGINIAL 535 BOAT CREW ASSIGNMENTS.
