Very nice site. I was at the other end, in 1970. We worked out of DaNang, on YFU's, LCM 8's and if we had to, LCM6's. I spent a lot of time on the DMZ, hauling supplies and personel up river to Dong Ha. You had things floating at you in the water, the Cua Viet river was lined with CORN fields. Never saw a rice paddie the whole time I was there. You can get sick to your stomach watching corn stocks. Can't find too much about the north, and the river boats, but we weren't PBR's, just supply boats. My pictures were taken from me by the MP's at the gate of the Airfield at DaNang when I was leaving country. I also had a landyard with eight pins and one spoon. Those were from a rocket attack in Hue. I drop the concussion grenade, my craftmaster scooped it up and we had a hell of an air burst. Those M.P.'s must have some real tales to tell their kids, and have the pictures to prove it...
Glad to see that the Navy got dirty, instead of leaving it all up to the Marines to fight the war...

AFTER TRAING AT PENDLETON AND 2WKS LEAVE I WAS SENT TO THE LAN OF THE SANDPANS. WAS IN DANANG AT CAMP TENSHAW FOR ABOUT A WEEK THEN SENT TO CAU-VIET ON THE DONG HA OR CAU-VIET RIVER, WHICH EVER YOU PREFER TO CALL IT. I WAS THE COXSIN ON LCM-38,"STING RAY 2" WAS MY CALL SIGN. I'M GLAD I WENT, BUT WISH I HADN'T OF, YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I MEAN. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DON'T KNOW WHERE CAU-VIET IS, IT IS OR USED TO BE, ABOUT 3 MILES SOUTH OF THE DMZ. I SURF THE NET QUITE A BIT ABOUT NAM,AND FIND A LOT OF PICTURES OF THE MARINES OR ARMY IN THE HILLS, A LOT ON THE DELTA, BUT NONE ON THE DMZ,WHY IS THIS? THE LCM I WAS ON WAS ALSO USED FOR MINE SWEEPS, BUT WE NEVER HAD THE SHELDING THAT YOU SEE THAT WAS USED IN THE DELTA, JUST THE BOAT AND ONE 50CAL. PLUS OUR REGULAR SIDE ARMS. THER WERE 2 OTHER MEN BESIDES MYSELF, A GUNNER WE CALLED RED AND AN ENGINEMAN WE CALLED SLIM. IF ANY ONE KNOWS OF THEM I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM THEM OR ANY OF YOU " RIVER RATS". got to go for now hope to here from you all "THANKS"

I found your site from the Swift Boat Home Page. I served on PCF-16 and 69 from August 1968 to August 1969.
Though I served in I Corp, I enjoyed your site. We lived on APL-5 while in Da Nang and then moved to a
barracks in approx. October of 1968. There was no air conditioning in the barracks.
My PCF-69 patrolled the Cua Dai river from March 1969 until our crew was broken up in approx. July, 1969.
At first, only the VNN junks from Coastal Group 14 patrolled the Cua Dai followed by the Swifts.
Eventually the Monitors arrived followed by the PBRs. The PBRs were probably the best boat for this
river because of their shallow draft. Our Swifts could easily match the fire power and speed of the PBR... but
not their shallow draft and turning ability. They were wonderful boats.... as were my Swifts.

Guest Record 641 Thanks, Bubba. I can finally look at where all the stuff happened without going blitzo, if you know what I mean. I visited the Vietnam Memorial Wall in DC last Summer for the first time. It helped to get rid of some hostilities I have carried for many years. Guest Record 680 First of all thanks for doing all this work and setting this up for everyone. I have blocked out most of Vietnam. I was stationed in Danang for 3 months at the Naval Support Communications Center. I was then transferred to PBR Mobile Base One. Took me several days to find it. I bummed rides and whatever. Stayed at a SeaBees camp one night on the way there. Don't have a clue where that was. I was a Radioman 3rd class. PBR Mobile Base One was called "Curveball" and we were located in a cove. I remember one Sunday we had about 67
helicopters land on beach, sanddunes, and on our helo pad that held one to join us in our great meal. They mostly be 101st airborne and knew where to get a great meal. There was a fire on beach where some Army guys got burned up and our guys put out fire and got bodies out but too late. Believe this happened October 1970. We turned over everything to the South Vietamese and our barges, PBR's, and Mike 8 Boat were towed seaside. We went down the coast and our destination was Danang Harbour. This was about a month before I came home in April 1971. Like any information available from all Vietnam Vets - Army, Navy, Marines, etc. that were there during 1970-1971. I be from Charleston, WV and thankful for any help.

I was with Riv.Sec 543 March to Sept. in Nha Be, was with 535 in Can Tho Sept. to March '68. Scott Delph (PBR 750) was my boat captain. Marc Cline and Tom Craghead were my best buds. Guest Record 690 Just thought I would try to reach out to a few Navy guys from back there. I really had it made my first tour, clubs and messes, working on slot machines in Danang, traveling all over I corps. I tore up my knee one night durring a mortor attack on the base. I ended up in 106th army hospital, yokohama japan. I felt bad about bieng there with all the others on the limb ward. anyway, I voluntered for a second tour when I recovered. yrbm-17 dong-tam was my next duty station. worked on river boats, water pumps, ramp gaskets for mike boats. Was the original eager-beaver firefighter on the navy base. Helped set up thousands of cambidoian refugees in dong tam at the old 9th div army base. If David Casman, Kieth tyler, Nick Nagel, frenchy, bear,or anybody else want to talk. E-mail me. I have some old photos of yrbm-17 crew

Guest Record 710 Hello fellow Gator Navy types and coast line sailors. I was on 3 LSTs and the USS WHITE
RIVER from 1964 to 1968, seeing action in Vietnam on each one. My memory is that we
were just doing the jobs assigned to us and didn't think anything about being heroes or
doing anything special. -- Looking back, we were actually heroes.
We did our duties, didn't think about doing anything else and deserve the kudos of the
AMERICAN PUBLIC. I know that the WHITE RIVER
received the SecNavUnitCommendation (2nd highest award in the Navy) an no telling what
else and I suppose each ship I was on received something.
I know that the USS WEXFORD COUNTY (LST 1168) was hit in Sept. 65 but fortunately the
shell didn't explode. We laughed it off at the time but looking back, I realize that the entire
crew is lucky to be alive. The TOM GREEN COUNTY and the WASHOE COUNTY were also
work horses and exceptionaly active and heroic, **Its really hard to believe that I could have
seen so much action in 4 years. Even rode helicopters off the White River going to get
the mail. Had to fly over hundreds of miles of jungles and even drop down in them to
let troops off going to and coming back from Chu Lai. A great experience but wouldn't
want to do it again. Me and my mail bag saw lot of action each time we pulled into port. Rode on swift boats,
tanks, jeeps, tanks that went into the ocean, everything. WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM anybody onboard those ships (White River from around Mar 67 to July 68) (Wexord County around Dec. 64 to Mar
65) (Tom Green County arund Mar 66 to July 66) ( Washoe County around July 66 to Mar
67) The dates and people are obviously fuzzy at this point, especialy as I drank Vietnamese
beer twice during those years and got completely wiped out. -- - - I spent several weeks
at Monkey Mountain in Danang getting transferred from one ship ot another, was on shore
patrol with a billy club and had to escort the drunk bus around the area while it was being
attacked (I've never seen anything so incredibly dumb), and spent the last day there waiting
for a swift boat to go down the entire coast of Vietnam to get to my new ship on operation
I waited at the Vietnamese naval base, drinking Vietnamese beer, don't remember much about
the ride down the coast except that we ran aground in enemy territory, etc. --- Anyway, it was
a four year blast and I even found time to bring home a Philipphino wife. Salutes to all!!
REMEMBER, we did the right thing. The USA let us down by fighting a limited war and
not going after the enemy in North Vietnam. Thats why we won WW11 and WW1, we went after
the enemy on their home ground (eventually). In addition, the protestors were protesting about the
wrong thing ..... They should have been saying, Get in there, fight, get it over with and come home,
not get out at any cost. REMEMBER, we can never fight another limited action. ITS WIN
OR ELSE. DON'T FIGHT A HOLDING WAR!!!!! I believe that we did learn that lesson.
WHAT EVER YOU DO..... Promote this slogan. No more limited wars. Go after the ENEMY.
Regards. Wesley

Guest Record 724 YR-71 was at SCRF Annex, Camp Tien Shau, DaNang. We repaired and recovered PBR's (RIVDIV 543) and Swift Boats.
With our LCM-8 that was made into a floating mobile drydock.
After the turn over of the Swifts, the PBRs as well as the Coast Guard Cutters. We were sent south first to Cat LO then Vung Tau (rough duty) then up river to Bhien Thuy.
Set up shop mid-river outside NAVSUPACT Bhien Thuy until we
we moved up river to Tan Chau. We were at Tan Chau for a few months then we had company...If I remember correctly it was APL-23. Then it came time to DEROS...being a snipe meant sea duty....so I ETS and joined the Army.
Spent 23 years in the military and without a doubt my tours in the Brown Water Navy is what I consider the high light of my career... not only because of the location by the people that I had the pleasure of serving with...
God Bless!

I guess us Army "boatie" (Aussie friends term) took over after most of the US Navy and Marine Corps returned home. You Navy guys should take your place of "Honor" for your duty in I Corps during the more dangerous and critical phases of that War. "Brown Water" was not exclusively the Mekong Delta.

Record 814 I was assigned to PBR Mobile Base One when it was still on the drawing board. At the time, no one could tell me anything about the base. After SERE training, I found it in Long Beach, CA. At that time it was just four barges being built and outfitted. It was ready to deploy in September of 1967. We loaded it aboard two LSD's; the Comstock and Whetstone and set sail for Saigon. Rough water made the crossing to Pearl a nine day ordeal. Before Pearl we got orders to Danang. I don't do rough seas very well (Being from the mid-west, I never learned about sea sickness until I joined the Navy.) At Pearl, I talked my skipper into letting me fly on ahead to Danang and set everything up for the base's arrival. We were towed up to Tan My at the mouth of the Perfume River from Danang in calm seas and anchored with four 6,000lb Danforth anchors. The PBR's showed up a few days later and started their patrols. Things were very quiet in that area of Vietnam until TET. Even then, the base itself never saw any action. To my knowledge, everyone got home safe and sound.

Record 819 Arrived 28 June 1969. Departed 29 June 1970. Served whole time on YFU64 as an Engineman. Remember Don Clark who has visited this site. Also, Nick Toto(NY), John "Aardvark" Nowak(NY), Howard Van Erem(WI), Thomas Jefferson Pate, some Army Warrant named Ferriby (?), and a lot of faces without names. I have a few pictures around the house somewhere. I also remember an EM3 named Ken Seith(NY) who after a trip to Subic Bay prompted us to paint "Almost Cherry" on the con until command in Danang had us remove it. It was a long year and a lot of work. I also remember the chief snipe on YFU61 was a good friend of mine named Karl "Red" Anderson. Last I knew he lived in FL but was originally from upstate NY. We went thru 9 craftmasters in the time I was there. Only one injured and evac'd. Would love to hear from any others who ever did time on YFU64.

Record 897 Never forget going south few days before Thanksgiving 1969 to unnamed beach to moved an Army Const Unit. After removeing a tank and an APC went back for third load. There were 5 to 15 foot waves that day from a typhoon moving in. As we went in a wave broached our Mike 8. A dozer operator with the Army Const Unit had been pushing us off the sand bar till we could back under up our own power. Needless to say this time another wave came in as he pushed us off. The blade of the dozer cut a hole below the water line unknown to us . As we backed off we lost power two one engine, side with the hole. The mike 8 set prowerless around 40 yards off the beach on the sand bar. Had to tie it off to a dozer wench line.
We set there on the beach till after Christmas waiting out the storm with the Cont Unit and an Army guard.A choppter flew in every day with mail for some, long rats and always a couple bottles of booze. Our secured beach (200x200 yds ? maybe) was next to some unknowen river.at the base of a mountian of DaNang at and old village site around 2-3 days by Mike 8
They finally got a Navy sea tug to pull our boat off and we headed back to DaNang. That first meal on the tug, steak and fries I can still taste. As we got Monkey Mountian in view, the tow line on the LCM broke. It ended up sinking in sight of the docks at Monkey Mountian. Anyone who remembers this Christmas of 1969 in Nam? Email me.

Record 915 In the spring of 1970 we moved some boats [swifts] from seafloat to the mekong in support of an operation to cease arms movement out of Cambodia. Our boats were used for insetion of army [Green Berets I think] for making a sweep of an island that layed both in Camboadia and Nam and then stood off to give needed fire support. While holding off about 1/4 mi. reported to boat officer that small arms fire was coming from one of two houches [huts] on shore. This info was relayed to those in charge and was given orders to lay in 50cal fire on targets. Walked in 50cal onto houch #1 and it went up in ball of flames. One NVA tried to ecape to other houche and took him out. Ground ops captured number of arms in 2nd houche. I don't remember the name of this op, but we had support of Seawolf and Cobra gunships.
Before or after this op we were policing river traffic coming out of Cambodia and the largest and highest Noahs arc like barge came down river. we determined to leave it alone and let it be searched by an other group

Record 1054 I arrived in DaNang in October of 1967 as a Radioman. There were about 25 of us just out of Radio A school and we were told that we were being assigned to a Comm Center. When we arrived to Camp Tien Shau(spelling?)we were informed that there was no room at the comm center and that we were to be farmed out to other areas. Given a choice of duty I chose the river. I am glad I did because even with Tet of 68 and all of the other things that went on for that year I am proud of the friends that I made and will always hold that time of my life as a great experience. I was on YFU 55 orginally but It went to Subic Bay about 3 months into my tour and I changed to YFU 66. Probably lucky because 55 got sunk on the Purfume River after its return to duty.
Thanks for the opportunity to sign the Book.

Record 1112 I served on LCU 1614 June "69" thru May "70". I was sleeping in my rack in the transit barricks. It was my third day in-country.I was awakened by a lot yelling. Outside it was like daylight but the sun wasent up yet. Charlie had hit the main ammo dump in DaNang. The feeling started then and it grew. The feeling that I was never going home. The 1614 had to be re-outfitted,it had just returned from Subic Bay. They told me it was at a ramp where an LST offloading ammo was hit and the explosion blew the con and mast off. I stayed on the 1614 we turned it over to the Vietnamese. That was hard. I saw how they treated the other boats we gave them. I'm home now. I have a boy 14. Record 1128 You guys have done some great work putting this material up on the web. It's great to see the Brown Water - Gator Navy getting some good reviews out on the Web. I'll have to email in some of my photos from I-Corps. We crewed Mike boats and various YFUs. Last one I was on was the YFU-79 which has an intersting history. Navy transferred the Skilacks over to the Army's 329th Heavy Boat Co in the Spring of 70. For about two months they ran mixed Navy-Army crews with an Army warrant as the craftmaster....that was intersting. When the Army eventually pulled the boats out of 'Nam in the early 70s, the YFU-79 and some others got dropped off in Guam. In the 80s, Navy got the YFU-79 back and put a flight deck on it for training allied helo crews in flight ops off of decks that were underway. The boat was redesignated as the IX-514 and continued operating until late 90s out of Pensacola. A very colorful history for a river boat ! Keep up your excellent work ! 1st rate !

Record 1145 I had been on the USS Alamo LSD-33,up around DaNang, when I got orders for Mine Div 113, went states side for the training and ended up learning how to drive a river boat, not bad for a Gunners Mate 3rd. Flew into Saigon like everybody else, and hopped a ride to Nha Be, We worked on our ORE stuff for awhile, watched a big ship sink off the pier from a mine of some sort. Then we pulled up stakes and moved up/down river to the Mekong. USS Askari, then a couple of YRBMs, lots of time checking out sampans and setting out in the middle of the river playing cards and taking pictures. Then we went up/down river to Ha Tien, where we patrol the river (I forgot the name) that comes out of Cambodia. That is where I got my Purple Heart and Bronze Star, catching shrapnel in the leg and helping out the crew that were worse off than I was. By the way it was on Friday the 13th. We were there for sometime 3 or 4 months then back to the Mekong in May one our way to Nha Be, where we were doing the Vietnamization of our boats to the ARVN's. All in all not to bad, however it is growing dimmer and dimmer on the small details. We did work with the little speed boats with the remote control and chain bottom drag, which I remember. Funny I cant remember my own boat capt. though. I do remember an EN from Xenia, Oh but not his name There was Hemphill, I think from Ca, a Wilcox that got pretty shot up and had to go stateside, I had a friend on the boat that got sunk, I think if was MSR #7, In fact he lives here in the same town I do, Rulon Young is his name. I will try and get some pictures out for all to see if there is anymore interest. Great site for all us River Rats. Have a good one.

there until 11/70. Was awaken at night to hop onto a helo with 3 other sailors with a TAD for Can An. Here is my dilemia I'm unable to find anything about this location. The base was positioned on a corner major river running in front with a small canal to the side leading into a forest and I understand it to be the U-Minh. There was a small village nearby on the river. We were unable to send or receive any mail from Nov.until Feb.(X-mas cookies in Feb). Across the river about an 1-1/2 hr pbr ride was a very small PBR base with a seal team. When I arrived after being overrun there were 7 of us. Within a week a marine capt. took over. Within a few weeks personnel topped a between 15-20 on the base.It sounds crazy but if this sounds familair to anyone please let me know.

Record 1350 NOTE: I am trying to find 6 Navy personnel who helped SAVE MY LIFE on 20 January 1970 by pulling me and a little one-armed South Vietnamese girl from the deadly swift current of the Song Cu De River beneath Namo Bridge on Highway 1 a few miles north of Danang, Vietnam near Red Beach.
Summary of Actions: On 20 January 1970, I was "riding shotgun" in a USMC jeep, as we were driving across Namo Bridge on Highway 1. In front of us, a young, nine-year old, one-armed South Vietnamese girl was riding her family's water bullalo across the bridge. Someone blew a vehicle's horn which frightened the water buffalo, making it jump, turn quickly, and sort of buck in the air, which threw the little girl off of the water buffalo and over the bridge railing into the swollen and rapid river below Namo Bridge. Fearing that the little, one-armed girl would surely drown, I quickly leaped from the jeep and unhesatating jumped feet-first from the bridge into the Song Cu De River below. Within only a minute or so, I had grabbed the little girl, but she fought me like a little "crazed wildcat" which resulted in both of us being pulled below the surface of the water. I held onto her with one hand and made my way to a bridge support/piling where I held one with my other hand.
Within minutes (seemed like hours), 15 to 25 individuals gatered on the bridge and helped pull us from the water. The individuals included 6 Navy personnel which consisted of 3 in a boat, 2 Navy Seabees, and a Corpsman.
Other individuals included a couple of Air Force police, a few Army soldiers, and a few Marines (2 bridge personnel with ropes, a radio operator, and about 3 or 4 USMC grunts or CAP Marines. I believe that 2 or 3 of my USMC rescuers were tankers, with one being a lieutenant named McMath.

Record 1560 From the few storys that I have been able to read since I logged on to this site, their seems to be a different story for each person. Some are looking for friends, others looking for shipmates, or jest people they knew. What hurts me to depth of my soul, is the one's that will never be able to log on, not able to answer a son, or daughters request for anyone who knew their father, or the wife who is still waiting, and hoping that he will come home. I am looking for any of my crew mates that were offloaded from the Epping Forest at DaNang in "65". I had a short contact with Harold Hollenbeck, Boise, ID. Unfortunately at that time I was occupied with staying alive, and I have lost any info. I had on how to contact him or anyone else. I have done some looking on the web for anyone from that time frame. It seems that nothing started in Vietnam until 1966. Now I know their were American troops their before 1966. SO how about some of you "older" vets drop a line or two, so the rest of us older guys can say HI. THANK YOU for this site.

Record 1601 I went over with the original group in 65, we were barricked in Ten Sha in Da Nang until the first boats arrived (8-Boats). We hauled cargo from the ships in the harbor to the original piers until the original sand ramp in the end of town was compleated. some of the guys that I served with were BM's 'Granny' Flag, Horace D. Breland, Lang, Nelson, Timmons etc. At almost the end of my first tour I almost got busted for stealing from a load and was given the option of going on Coastal Ops. Don't remember his first name but the other boat driver was known as 'The Mighty' Quinn, a skivvi waver and boat driver. We ran the first 2 boats up to and to Dong Ha at the end of that year. RMKBRJ still had the dredge in the river and we lived in the camp until they rebuilt it for us.
During the next 2 years I served in ops on the Hue river, did several tours back to the Cua Viet river, was the last 8 boat out of town at the fall of Hue and was still running the river in Dong Ha during Tet of 68.
I was in the same jeep with Frosty Cain and Ken Brown on the way back from Hue when they were killed by a sniper, one shot 2 dead. Would appreciate hearing from any of 'us' that served during that time.

I returned to Cua-Viet and P.B.R.'s in January 1968, and stayed with them (including TET-68), until I went home again in August of 1968 because I extended again for 6 months. I went home and returned in September 1968, and stayed with TF-115 (P.B.R.'S) until I left Viet-Nam at 12:30 P.M., on the 23rd of March, 1969. I had just returned from night patrol on the morning of the 21st and climbed on the roof of the Comm. bunker when YFU-62 was blown up by a remote detonated 700 lb mine as it pulled away from the concrete ramp and made its swing up river to go to Dona-Ha ramp with 105 mm. rounds.

Record 1708 Became the plane captain for the station Skytrain, a C-117d, one of the finest R4D's ever built. Call Sign: Navy-124. We hauled the mail and extra parts and personnel in Support of Operation Market Time and Game Warden, throughout Vietnam and beyond. We supported Det TSN, aka Aircofat, and re-fueled there often, hoping to get a ham sammitch before Mammasan sold out, or that thievin' monkey, Sam got to it! We flew along with three other 117's, #'s 17270, 50780, 50801, and ours, 17124, built in 1938. The Danang Detachment had one also but I cannot remember the number, having never crewed on that one. That bunch kept to themselves, but we joined up one night in Cavite City, RP and partied like there was no tomorrow at Mammas Place. It's sad that the Navy pulled out of there in 1972. The Aircofat Legend was true, We got done what needed doing through determination, skill, guts, and individual commitment to the group effort. We kept those old planes and H-34's flying no matter what. Have a warm PBR, or a Carling's Black Label at 86 degrees, sometime and just reflect on what we accomplished. Nice Site!

Record 1756 Just found your site. Served in the Nam from Jan, 69 -Jan 70. Was assigned to PFC 13, and the latter part of my tour I was MAA at DaNang Camp Ten Sha Annex. Ran alot of mission on th Cua Di Rive south of DaNang. Our orignal boat crew had a reunion about four years ago . Lt. Morton Hodgens III, RD2 Charles Russell, BM3 Barry Whitesel, and myself GMG2 Tommy Francis. We had not talk to each other since we left the Nam in Jan of 1970. I found these men through the SBA and contacted them on Thanksgiving. I would recomend everyone to try to find their Boat mates it was very healing. Hope to hear from some of the Swiftee's that was there during our tour 1969-70. Great Site, Tommy

Record 1775 I was part of a small group of "advisers" assigned to Beach Support Unit 1 stationed at a tiny base about 8 miles from "Soncha" a villiage across the city of Danang, and about 5 miles from the Danang River The villiage was located below Marble Mountain and past China Beach. All of us were volounteers.
We operated PT boats and PCF (Patrol Craft Fast. Two of the PT boats were of alumunimum construction, WWII vintage. The rest were of "modern" Honduran mahogany construction with twin DELTIC (British) engines.
I was an ET-3
My duffel bag was stolen from storage on a subesequent overseas assignment. I lost what few pictures I had taken during my South Viet Nam tour. I would appreciate contact from anyone having pictures of the base, boats, or personnel who were also there during that periond.

I saw them in Da Nang,My orders came thru and I went to Mare Island For S.E.R.E training. Then off to Dong Tam and Task Force 117 River Division 132. They blew up the baracks our first nite in Dong Tam.I believe it was March 69.They took my Friend from S.E.R.E. training and put him on an ASPB as an Engineman until his boat was ready.I never saw him after that as the ASPB hit a mine and he was Killed. He was from California, and one hell of a nice guy.
I have been to the wall to see him a couple times, also I rode in Rolling Thunder 4 years ago. What a feeling that was we must never forget our MIA-POW's. Would like to here from Riv Div 132 River Rats.

Record 1788 WOW! Does this bring back some memories! I was a QM2 on LCU 1485 in 1967-68. I clearly remember April 30, 1968 when we were ambushed by NVA regulars on the Cua Viet up in I Corps. We were in convoy wiht LCU 1477 which took the first B-40's. They took out most of the crew. Our boat received multiple hits but only minor injuries. As a result, our craftmaster and I believe one other sailor on the 1477 both received Silver Stars.
Looking back, though, the "fun" times outweighed the bad. Our boat made McHales Navy look tame! How we ever survided, I'll never know. Wouldn't want to do it again, but sure don't regret it.

After marines kicked their asses back across DMZ went back up to help rebuild Cua Viet. Served with PBR's there until finally leaving Viet Nam on 23 March, 1969. I was standing on top of the Comm Bunker when YFU-62 blew sky high from that command detonated mine pulled out to mid channel after the sweeps passed by at first light. Welcome home to ALL of you. His son Elmo and I became friends, and the Admiral always blamed Agent Orange for the cancer that killed him. Love to reconnect with Sutter County folks. Great website. Thanks.

Record 1931 I WAS ASSIGNED TO SCRF(SMALL CRAFT REPAIR FACILITY)AT NSA DANANG IN JUNE 1970. THEN I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE YR71 ENGINE OVERHAUL SHOP IN SUPPORT OF PCF's. I WAS A EN2. THE PCF's HAD RECENTLY BEEN TURNED OVER TO THE VN's. YRBM16 WAS MOORED BEHIND THE YR71. WE LIVED AND WORKED ON BOTH. YR70 WAS MOORED NEXT TO YR71. I FULLY EXPECTED THAT I WOULD NOT SPEND A FULL YEAR IN-COUNTRY. THEN TO MY SURPRISE YR71 WAS TOWED TO VUNG TAU, WE WERE TOLD THAT WE WERE GOING TO CHAU DOC.YR70 AND YRBM16 STAYED IN DANANG. WE ENJOYED A WONDERFUL R&R FOR A MONTH IN VUNG TAU AND BREIFLY WAS AT CAT LO. THEN WE WERE TOWED TO BIHN THUEY AND SPENT 3 MONTHS THERE. PCF's STILL HAD AMERICAN CREWS AND WE WERE IN SUPPORT OF THEM. THEN WE WERE TOWED TO OUR FINAL DESTINATION NOT CHAU DOC BUT TAN CHAU. WE STILL SUPPORTED PCF's. THE YRBM20 WAS ALSO THERE IN SUPPORT OF PBR's. WE SPENT 6 MONTHS AT TAN CHAU. THE PCF's WERE FINALLY TURNED OVER TO THE VN's IN ABOUT APRIL OF 1971.AT THIS TIME THE VN's WERE JOINED WITH US AND WE TRAINED THEM TO TAKE OVER. IN MAY 1971 THE YRBM20 WAS SERIOUSLY HIT ONE NIGHT WITH RECOILLESS ROUNDS OF SOME KIND. IT DESTROYED A HUEY AND THERE WERE SOME WIA's AND KIA's. I LEFT IN JUNE 1971 AND THE YR71 WAS SUPPOSE TO COMPLETELY TURN OVER IN JULY.

Record 1949 I made two tours to Vietnam 1967 and 1968. I worked in CIC operation division as an SN & RD3. The Boston helped in Naval Gun Fire Support in North and South Vietnam. In April, 1967 the Boston was anchored in DaNang harbor for a short stay. We received hostile fire from the shore lines and returned fire back with the mighty eights and five inch guns. The Boston along with the HMS 39 Hobert received direct hits from the vietcon enemy shorelines near the DMZ. Sprays of water was all around the Boston, but not one sailor got killed. The Boston shot more than 38,000 rounds to help the marines out out hostial fire. All Vietcon small boats moving South from the North was sunk by Naval Ships. We were on duty twelve on and twelve off. General Quarters keep us on our toes to support or comrades. I'm proud I served and would do it again. There's more to tell but not enough room to publish here. I have Vietnam cruise book pictures from the 67 and 68 cruise. Because of Agent-Orange I have several illness but not service-connected yet. All Veterans who served at or in Vietnam needs to let your Congressman know that we need to be compensated for our illness. Vietnam Veterans, let's All stand up for what is Right for our government to reconize in waters off the coast of South Vietnam is in-country. May God bless America and, our comrades who are protecting us today. Freedom is paid for a High price. Shall we ever Forget? I should say Not. POW's and MIA's are Not Forgotten. A Texan.

Record 1999 Our first trip into Cua Viet was also a real learning experience. We hit the beach, put the engines at full ahead, and because of the heavy incoming artillery barrage left the boat and ran for the bunkers. These were hastily constructed of metal conex shipping containers surrounded with sandbags. I hunkered down against the back wall and watched the fireworks, feeling safe from the shrapnel that was flying around outside. A Navy corpsman (combat medic) was near the entrance smoking a cigarette, watching for causalities outside.
“I wouldn’t sit there if I were you.”
“Why not?”
“We haven’t sandbagged that wall yet.”
I moved to the front wall.
As soon as the last forklift load left our boat we ran back aboard and pulled off the beach. If the boat had taken a direct hit the entire beach would have been wiped out - our cargo was 200 tons of high explosives. There were several shrapnel scars on the superstructure, and large jagged pieces of metal lying around the deck. We waited in mid stream for the remainder of the boats, and fought our way back to the ocean.
The areas around the rivers were declared “free fire” zones; if we were shot at, we returned fire. If something looked like it might shoot, we fired. If something looked like something could be hiding behind it that might shoot, we fired. It took us a few trips (and many causalities) to learn this. The Navy lost a couple of boats because the crews were too nice; they only fired at targets they could see.
A small figure sits on the bank of the river fishing. (In the middle of a firefight?) Nearby a boat lines up on a mark. The “fishing” boy touches the ends of his “fishing lines” together. A five hundred pound command detonated bomb explodes under the boat, blowing a hole the size of a truck in the bottom, killing or injuring the entire crew.
It was a very small beach - just large enough for two of our boats at a time to squeeze in. The actual area for cargo operations was about 100 feet wide and maybe 100 yards deep. It was well within range of North Vietnamese 130 mm howitzers setting North of the DMZ. The Soviet made 130 howitzer is a very effective and accurate piece of artillery. I’m very glad and fortunate that they had no artillery spotters in close to correct their fire.

Record 2005 Was Coxwain of LCM-876 for three months in Danang Harbor. Later transferred to YFU-70. Spent rest of time on coastal ops. to Dong-ha, Hue, Tan mi,etc. Monsoon time was real nasty in South China Sea. It's a wonder those old boats survived! Pretty hard to navigate with no visibility and junk equipment. Was a real thriller riding the surf into the Cau-Viet or Perfume River on 30' waves. Even more so trying to get out!! Boat hit a mine in Perfume River. crew repaired hole, pumped out water and made it back to Danang on one engine. Talk about slow boat to China! Good crew on boat. Record 2076 I joined the Navy in June of 1965 and went to boot camp at Great Lakes. After boot camp, I was stationed on the USS Alamo LSD 33 out of San Diego, but soon departed to the shores of Vietnam with a group of Marines. Landed most of them at Chu Lai. I then volunteered for shore duty in Viet nam. Left Viet nam to go back to the state for survial school at corona, Ca. Was picked up my helicopter to fly out of Danang and almost immediately came under fire from the VC with me hanging out a helicopter with my dress whites. What a sight. Damn near got killed by the VC and the maries in Chulai for having on a white Navy Uniform. It took me 14 days to get from Viet nam to Coronado. After survial school I then went back to Danang. I served on the YW 128 which supplied most the LCU, Swift boats, floating barracks with fresh water that was heavy with Agent Orange. I was also on a Yard tug and several other craft, but spent most of with time on the YW128 at Monkey Mountain. I was the only African AMerican on the YW. Record 2095 I spent my tour as a Marine, 3rd Marine Division, running rivers and convoys. I was assigned to the 3rd at Dong Ha. I would come up from Da Nang on any craft that would haul our non-priority gear/supplies (soda, smokes, writing paper, etc.) Our little group rode shotgun on mike 6's, 8's, YFU, anything. Because of the non-priority load, sometimes at Cua Viet, we were off-loaded and stayed a few days until the priority gear went first. We lived on the boats with the Navy and were proud of it.
I can see by some of the entries that the men on the boats in 1967 and 1968, Tet, remember the stress. I have nothing but respect for you guys. I was there during the same period of time and also spent time on the Perfume River going to Hue and then by truck convoy to Phu Bi and back to Da Nang by C-130 to start the next trip.
I want to inform the webmaster of this page that I have super 8 films of Cua Viet being hit, Da Nang harbor, Dong Ha and a trip down the river , I am also in the film. The films have been transfered to DVD, approx. 20 minutes in lenght, 10 minutes at Cua Viet, we lost about 7 boats that day. In the film the 65 boat is pulling out to safety and an LST is fighting the fires. Some of the remaining boats are in flames and tanks are rolling. In the background of the action you see the old white sign with the name, "Cua Viet" writen on it.
Note: This film is not for sale. If the webmaster would like a FREE copy, I would be happy to send it to him, so that he could put it on this webpage. I want to give back to the men on those boats.
I requested for disability in Jan., 2003. I was in a number of hospitals in Vietnam and medevaced out of country to a hospital for a few weeks before coming back to the Cua Viet River. The VA Board informed me that Being assisgned to the PX (I never sold anything or worked inside of the PX) and riding the rivers didn't constitute me being in a combat zone, so I am appealing.
This web page maybe used as a positive tool to assist many veterans that served on the rivers. I thank you for letting me serve with you.
PS. I could use all of the information that I can get on the Cua Viet and Perfume Rivers during 1967 and 1968. I would appreciate anyones input who recalls moving/transporting PX gear and the Marine escorts.

Record 2132 Was on board the YR-71 in Danang and stayed on board until we arrived in Tan Chau.
If you remember me drop me a line. I was the guy who ended up with the gash in the head when the rockets hit in and near SCRF in early 1970.
Randy Jacobson and I were the ones that pulled the body of the guy named Cherry out of the river near Bhien Thuy.
Left the Navy after my third tour in Vietnam and came home and joined the Army after finishing college... Retired in 1990 as Chief Warrant Officer.
Just started working for the Department of Defense at a MEPS Station..(induction center) This Old Soldier treats the "young recruits'good... cause I been there...done that twice once going in Navy and once going in Army.
WELCOME HOME BROTHERS!]

Record 2136 I was in Vietnam from 1966-67 on the YFU 55 under the command of Chief Calvin Parks and Leonard C. Crook (BMC). If anyone out there was on the 55, let me know of your experiences. I am also looking for a good photo of her. I have found the 54 and 56, but no luck with the 55.
I'm glad I accidentally found this site!
